The iron golem is a neutral mob that spawns in villages. They will not attack you unless you attack it or any of the villagers. It will also attack nearby hostile mobs. Killing it will drop iron ingots, which makes it very easy to get iron early into the game. You can also use them to construct automatic iron farms, giving you a constant flow of iron throughout the game.
